Ingredients for Minecraft Cake

For the Cake:

  • 2⅓ cups all-purpose flour + 1½ tbsp extra
  • ½ cup cocoa powder + 3 tbsp extra
  • 1 tbsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 1 cup milk + 1½ tbsp extra
  • 1⅓ cups white sugar
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 4 eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

For the Decoration:

  • ¼ cup cherry jam (or strawberry jam)
  • 3 cups chocolate buttercream frosting
  • 14 oz marzipan (or fondant icing)
  • 5 drops red food coloring
  • 1 tbsp confectioners’ sugar

Instructions

Step 1: Preheat and Prep

  • Heat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  • Grease and flour two 9-inch square cake pans.

Step 2: Make the Batter

  • Mix flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
  • In another bowl, mix milk and keep it ready.
  • Beat sugar and butter until light and fluffy (about 4 mins).
  • Add eggs one at a time, then mix in vanilla.
  • Add flour and milk slowly, mixing gently in between.
  • Divide batter into both pans.

Step 3: Bake the Cake

  • Bake for 30–40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  • Let cakes cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then move to a wire rack to cool fully for 30 minutes.

Step 4: Assemble the Cake

  • Trim the top of each layer to flatten.
  • Spread jam on the bottom layer and place the second layer on top.
  • Cover the whole cake with chocolate buttercream, saving 2 tablespoons for later.

Step 5: Decorate Minecraft Style

  • Take a small piece of marzipan and color it red using food coloring.
  • Dust your surface with confectioners’ sugar and roll out the remaining white marzipan.
  • Cut into a 9-inch square and place on top of the cake.
  • Cut strips for the sides, adding square notches like in Minecraft.
  • Stick the strips to the sides and connect them with the top layer.

Step 6: Finish the Design

  • Roll out the red marzipan and cut into small red squares.
  • Stick them on top using the leftover frosting to look like Minecraft blocks.
